Death Cab For Cutie's Directions — an ambitious music video accompaniment to their album Plans — gets off to an auspicious start with the unveiling of a full length video for "Marching Bands Of Manhattan" and a preview of the entire project on deathcabforcutie.com. The preview begins playing immediately on their homepage, while the video can be seen by clicking the "View Directions" link.
"Marching Bands Of Manhattan" focuses on a man who is presumably overwhelmed by his sterile, corporate surroundings. He retreats to a room where first he huffs from a crumpled paper bag and then decides to put a larger one on his head. Poking eye-holes in the paper sack, he's able to transport himself on a beach where he finds a woman in the same existential predicament. "Marching Bands Of Manhattan" is directed by P.R. Brown.
The trailer for Directions mixes footage from several videos to be featured in the project, plus interview segments in which the band members. The preview also promises that Directions will indeed be released as a DVD with bonus features. For now, though, the videos will only be available on the band's Web site, where they will be unveiled one by one.
