WATCH IT: Jeremih "Birthday Sex"

Jeremih Birthday Sex When it comes to making a video for a song as brazenly sexy/silly as "Birthday Sex," you have two options. 1) Camp it up. Go take a look at the old video for "Thong Song," in which director Joseph Kahn embraced the Spring Break essence of the song by placing Sisqo among the bootyful hordes on a beach. Great video, huge hit, potentially bad career move for Sisqo. 2) Play it down. Director Paul Hunter disregards the kitsch factor of the lyrics in this video for "Birthday Sex." No cake, no candles, no humor. Instead we get a serious and slick depiction of Jeremih and his lady hitting record on a camcorder and then hitting it in every room of a modern house (including a recreation of the classic refrigerator raunch scene from 9 1/2 Weeks.) The "Birthday Sex" video may not be as fun as you may have liked, but it seems clearly designed to image Jeremih as a traditional r&b singer and give him a future chance at being enjoyed on the 364 days that aren't his birthday. --> watch "Birthday Sex"

I said it once... and I shall say it again: "If a song is about a birthday "act," how about at least placing some of those key elements into the video? If the lyrics make reference to staying in on said birthday, and you secure a house as the location, you think you could use more than two rooms?" I really wish that videos presently would have SOMETHING to do with the lyrics, subject, or meaning of the song. Paul is a very talented director, but I would have NEVER guessed that he shot this video because basically... it just is not very good. What directors, commissioners, etc, are forgetting is the fan. If you ask fans what they expected to see in this video BEFORE they saw it... I am sure they were not expecting to see sex, but I am almost positive they did visualize (when closing their eyes and listening to the song) exactly what you thought was smart to omit: Cakes, candles, a gift, a card, etc. A celebration of some sort in some tangible way. Because realistically, in some shape form or fashion, that is the way a birthday is celebrated.
