MTV ALERT: 2008 VMA Winners
Random thoughts on the 2008 MTV VMAs:
- In a Palinesque stroke of brilliance, the Britney Spears comeback began with a coronation. The pop star collected three awards and was called upon to merely thank God, her fans and her label (not necessarily, perhaps, in that order) and be disgusted by the thought of kissing Jonah Hill. All much easier to accomplish than a performance, but a nice apology for the debacle at the 2007 Vegas VMAs.
- The host. That English fella with the peacock hair, crazy eyes and a penchant for incessant jabbering. I can't recall his name and I've decided to not look it up. Blimey.
- Although there's no category for best telecine or color correction, the many "live music video" performances on the Paramount backlot served as a tutorial to the importance of the telcine artist — and all the other post-production scrubbing that's not possible with a live telecast — in making a music video look like a music video.
- No VMA simulcast on the MTV Networks HD channel Palladia. According to the Palladia launch announcement, we may have to wait for the Best Of 2008 week — December 22 thru December 28 — for HD telecasts of the VMAs, Vh1 Hip Hop Honors and the CMT Awards — to see the show in HD.
And now, the 2008 MTV VMA winners...

WHO IS: Desmondh
In the 60s and 70s, we had Pauline Kael. In the 80s and 90s, Siskel and Ebert. Now, in the digital age of user generated content, we have the inimitable Desmondh. As part of the great social experiment that is FNMTV, (you know, that show on MTV where they actually show music videos) the brilliant folks at MTV have created a forum where fans can upload video responses to music videos. Very meta. Rising to the top is 20-year-old University of Georgia student De'smond Henry reporting from what appears to be his dorm room. His reviews are succinct, merciless, and unintentionally hilarious as he breaks down director Andy Bruntel's trippy trailer park video, "Eraser" by No Age. "It has no concept except running. Everybody is running. They should call [the band] No Walking." He delivers his reviews sentence by sentence as he reads from a piece of paper taped to the camera. Every review is punctuated by him delivering his final word and quickly hitting the stop button. Start the countdown, this kid will probably have his own show by the end of the year. [written by Josh Forbes*] --> watch Desmondh on She & Him "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" and No Age "Eraser" and Boys Like Girls "Thunder"
*Josh Forbes covers the videos he wants to cover in this special week as guest blogger on Videostatic...

No need to despair if you're missing this weekend's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN. Not only is it gonna rain, but drugs may be in short supply. Fuse will be putting the cherry on top of its big Get Your Music On rebranding campaign with a tribute to what's arguably the biggest U.S. music festival. The channel will be spotlighting live clips previous years and honoring this years performers with special episodes of their regular video and music programming. The main event is Fuse Bonnaroo Front Row: live coverage of this years event each night beginning at 9pm — with the bulk of it coming via a three hour block on Sunday night. Performances scheduled to be broadcast include Metallica, Mastodon, Against Me, My Morning Jacket and much more.
Sunday, June 15, 9pm: MuchMusic Video Awards
This one is for my Canadian peoples. The annual MuchMusic Awards are this Sunday in Toronto. NEWS: F'N MTV... New Prime Time Video Debut Show
If you've been muttering "F'n MTV" every time you tune in and see Tila Tequila dry humping some "lucky" man (or woman or object), you may have to change your tune — for the Summer, at least. MTV has officially announced a torrent of music programming that puts the focus on music video premieres, live performances and lots of viewer interaction. Which is why the F'N actually stands for "Feedback" and "New." Not "fuckin'."
The Summer surge begins June 13 with the 8pm ET/PT premiere of weekly music show F'N MTV Premieres… hosted by emo idol Pete Wentz. Each live broadcast will boast exclusive music video debuts, guest appearances and live performances. The premiere episode will feature Panic At The Disco, Snoop Dogg, The Pussycat Dolls, Flo-Rida and The Ting Tings. Other artists confirmed for future episodes are Vampire Weekend, Boys Like Girls and Lil' Wayne. And, for those with HD: MTV Networks' HD channel MHD will be airing weekly F'N MTV Premieres... Live Sets compilations that consist of the live performances from each show.
That's the "New" component of F'N MTV. The "Feedback" starts after the videos air and viewers can visit the F'N section of MTV.com and comment on what they've seen and/or upload videos of their own. Wanna parody the video? One up the original performance? Go on a rant? Go ahead. Record it and upload it to MTV, where you and your peers can vote on their favorites. The best and most popular fan-submitted content will then make its way onto MTV proper .
So, if you need to sum it up easily: F'N MTV is like having an MTV Video Music Awards show every Friday, but with music video debuts instead of awards. The rest is kind of like YouTube, but with a specific music focus and a national cable channel that just may air your masterpiece.
The F'N MTV Premieres show is being executive produced by Dave Sirulnick and Den Of Thieves principal Jesse Ignjatovich — who worked at MTV for 14 years and served a similar role on the most recent MTV VMA telecast. Executives In Charge of music and talent for the show are Amy Doyle and Joanna Bomberg. Garrett English is Executive in Charge, and Jen Jones is the producer. The sponsors are Verizon Wireless and Rhapsody.
Tune in Friday, June 13 @ 8pm for the launch of this potential cure to those Summertime Blues... (bad pun, but a great song)
